Organising the end-of-year party is a job nobody volunteers for, yet everybody remembers. Get it right and it becomes the night your team, club or family talks about until next December. In Echuca-Moama you have more good options than most regional towns: a private dining room on High Street, a steam-driven paddlesteamer, bowls greens under festoon lights, a riverside vineyard.
We host a lot of December functions ourselves, so we know the questions organisers ask. Here's our guide to the region's best Christmas party venues, including ours and plenty that aren't, with the practical details to help you choose.
First, decide what kind of party it is
Before you compare venues, settle three things.
- Numbers. An intimate team of 10 and a whole-company celebration of 150 need very different rooms. Get a realistic headcount early, even if it's a range.
- Style. Sit-down and long-table? Cocktail-style and mingling? Active, with bowls or mini golf? Or something only Echuca can offer, on the river itself?
- Lunch or dinner, weekday or weekend. December Friday and Saturday nights are the first dates to go everywhere. A Friday long lunch or a midweek dinner is often easier to secure and easier on people driving home. Victorian school term ends on Friday 18 December, and Christmas Day falls on a Friday this year, so the last two weeks before Christmas will be the busiest.
Opa Echuca: private dining, Greek-style
554 High St (cnr Radcliffe St), Echuca · Groups of 6 to 150
We'll declare our interest up front: this is us. If your idea of a Christmas party is a long table, generous food and real conversation, this is what we do best.
Every Opa function is served share-style, straight to the middle of the table. Plates come off the charcoal grill: dips and warm pita as guests arrive, saganaki and mezze, chargrilled meats and seafood, loukoumades to finish. Sharing does the work of an icebreaker: nobody is stuck with a menu decision, and the table relaxes around the food.

Choose your space
- The Chef's Table (6–12 guests): a private room at the heart of the restaurant, suited to executive dinners and small teams.
- The Cyclades Oasis Balcony (10–30 guests): open-air dining under bougainvillea and river gums, seated or cocktail-style. December evenings in Echuca were made for it.
- The Upstairs Events Space (25–60 seated, up to 80 standing): our largest private room, with its own bar and a microphone for speeches. It opens onto the Cyclades Oasis Balcony.
- Full venue hire (up to 150 guests): combine the spaces or take the whole restaurant.
Choose your menu
Four share-style set menus, from the relaxed two-course Taverna to the Panigiri (named for the Greek village festival), the four-course Symposium and our signature Aegean table with oysters, chargrilled octopus, whole snapper and wagyu off the coals. Most dishes can be made gluten-free, vegetarian options are available, and drinks packages can be arranged.

Moama Bowling Club: big rooms and barefoot bowls
6 Shaw St, Moama
If you need scale, or a party that gets everyone moving, the Moama Bowling Club has the region's largest range of function spaces. The Venue, its biggest room, seats 200-plus and has its own private bar. The Bistro Terrace is a more secluded space for around 40 at a banquet. For a classic Aussie Christmas break-up, the outdoor barbecue areas overlooking the bowling greens each take up to 80 guests, with barbecue buffet or canapé packages, barefoot bowls, and heaters and fans for whatever December brings.
Smaller groups that don't want to run their own event can join the club's shared Christmas party at The Greens on Friday 4 December, which includes barefoot bowls, a Christmas buffet and live entertainment. The club is also home to Junction and Embr, two of Moama's most talked-about restaurants.
Rich River Golf Club: sporty or formal
Moama
Rich River's Tatalia Function Centre suits groups of about 40 to 280. It offers two ways to celebrate. The "sporty Christmas party" works in three steps: pick an activity (bowls, croquet, golf or mini golf), then a menu, then drinks. The more formal affair offers Christmas-themed two-course menus, a Christmas buffet, or two- and three-course menus. Bon-bons, Christmas napkins and table decorations are provided for functions in the Tatalia centre, which takes one job off the organiser's list.
On the river: paddlesteamer parties
Nothing says Echuca quite like taking the party onto the Murray.
- PS Hero was built in 1874 and is a genuine steam-driven paddlesteamer, available for corporate functions and private charters. She can cater for up to 75 guests by arrangement and has a fully licensed bar and climate-controlled heating and cooling. Her operators recommend pairing a cruise with the heritage Steampacket Inn if guests are staying over.
- Murray River Paddlesteamers offers group packages and in-house catering for groups of 15 or more. Its PS Canberra has both enclosed and open deck areas and a licensed bar. For a very small, very special celebration, PS Emmylou has just eight cabins for up to 16 guests on overnight cruises.
A popular format: a sunset cruise for drinks, then back to shore for a sit-down dinner, so you get the river and a proper meal.
The Port of Echuca: a heritage backdrop
74 Murray Esplanade, Echuca
For a stand-up celebration with real wow factor, the Port of Echuca hires out the historic Echuca Wharf, the area beneath it, the Rudder Area, the Earnshaw Walkway, the riverbank lawns and a paddlesteamer. You can book them individually or together, and a dedicated coordinator helps from booking to the night itself. It suits a welcome-drinks event or a larger corporate celebration that ends at a restaurant nearby.
Winery Christmas parties in Perricoota
- Morrisons Riverview Winery & Restaurant (123 Merool Road, Moama) has river-view grounds, its own wines from 15 hectares of vines, and an events offering for occasions big and small. It's a natural fit for a daytime Christmas lunch, as the restaurant trades during the day from Wednesday to Sunday.
- Cape Horn Vineyard (489 Stewarts Bridge Road, Echuca), about 15 minutes from town on the Murray, hosts company functions and Christmas parties. It has a covered riverside deck, lawns, wood-fired pizzas and grazing platters. Groups of 10 to 21 adults can pre-book its courtesy bus, which solves the designated-driver question neatly.
A simple planning timeline
- October: settle the budget, numbers and style. Shortlist two or three venues and ask them about December availability.
- By early November: confirm the venue and date, and pay any deposit. Send a save-the-date.
- Mid-November: choose the menu and drinks package. Collect dietary requirements (gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, allergies) and pass them on to the venue in one list.
- Two weeks out: confirm final numbers, speeches, any AV, and transport. On busy December nights it pays to book a bus or nominate drivers well ahead.
- On the night: hand it over to the venue and enjoy it. You've earned it.
Frequently asked questions
When should I book a Christmas party venue in Echuca-Moama?
As early as you can. October is ideal. December Friday and Saturday nights are booked first, especially the weekends leading up to the end of the school term on Friday 18 December. If your preferred date has gone, ask about a Friday long lunch or a midweek dinner.
What is the best Christmas party venue in Echuca for a small team?
For groups of around 6 to 30, a private dining room or semi-private space works best. Opa's Chef's Table seats 6 to 12 and its Cyclades Oasis Balcony takes 10 to 30. Moama Bowling Club's Bistro Terrace takes around 40 at a banquet.
Which Echuca-Moama venues can host large Christmas parties?
For 100 or more guests, Moama Bowling Club's The Venue (200-plus seated), Rich River Golf Club's Tatalia Function Centre (groups up to 280) and Opa's full-venue hire (up to 150) are the main options. The Port of Echuca's wharf and riverbank lawns suit larger stand-up events.
Can we have a Christmas party on a paddlesteamer in Echuca?
Yes. PS Hero can cater for up to 75 guests on private charters, and Murray River Paddlesteamers offers group packages with catering for 15 or more. The Port of Echuca can also include a paddlesteamer in its function hire.
Can venues cater for gluten-free and vegetarian guests?
Most can, if you tell them in advance. At Opa, most dishes on our share-style function menus can be made gluten-free and vegetarian options are available. Send all dietary requirements to your venue in one list when you confirm numbers.
